The definition of "sublime" is noble or exalted. From the birth of America up until very recently, black Americans have been heavily discriminated against, let alone praised and portrayed in many historical portraits. Through her paintings, Sherald captures the lives of black Americans in ways that have not been portrayed historically. By titling her exhibit "American Sublime," Sherald helps display the lives and achievements of all Americans, not just some.
