I was inspired by a display I saw at the San Jose Tech Interactive Body Worlds exhibition. I wanted to display the hands's blood vessels similar to how they were displayed at the exhibition---encased in resin, taking the form of the arm and hands without needing to be held together by skin. I wanted to incorporate a glass texture for the skin. Although I haven't decided on an SI inquiry yet, this painting fits some of my ideas like bodily processes and charts/means of visual education. Overall, the main purpose of this painting was to practice creating textures out of my comfort zone.
I did multiple preliminary sketches of the hands and practiced painting in thin layers to create the glass effect. When painting, I ran into clarity issues of the blood vessels and the overall form of the hands. I ended up redoing the painting and only doing the main arteries of the hand.
My materials are related to the idea. Although I am already decently proficient in acrylic medium, I had seen this technique on Instagram of a painter creating a similar glass-like texture in their paintings by layering very thin paint layers in acrylic, over and over again. The paint in basically all of my previous works is extremely opaque, so I thought it would be cool to try out this technique to paint a more translucent texture that I have struggled to create before.
