blogpost: SI #6 progress

  • What idea is guiding this work?

As part of my SI on charts, I wanted to explain the process of osteoporosis. Although osteoporosis is simply the deterioration of bone, I wanted to show a progression of time like in SI 5, rather than an illustrated list like in my other SI projects. To do this, I took the subject matter literally---I am using a pocketwatch that is deteriorating over time to show how osteoporosis progresses as time passes. The pocket watch has a cover that looks like a rib cage, a lining of bone marrow, and a chain made of vertebrae that slowly deteriorate as time progresses. I want to use chromatic aberration and glitching effects to show the time progression as well. My focus for this piece will be lighting, specifically lighting different materials such as metal and bone.

  • How are you practicing, experimenting, or revising aspects of this work? (you can pick one)

I revised the subject matter that I wanted to use for this piece---originally, I wanted to go more scientific and show the molecules that makeup bone deteriorate. However, I felt that this approach made the process seem non-human in a sense, whereas my goal was to show how osteoporosis can sneak up on its victims over time, just like how rust or a broken chain can lead to a pocketwatch being damaged.

  • How can your choices of materials or processes relate to your idea?

I want to use pastel and charcoal for this piece. My main reasoning for this is because of the intricate details and sharp contrast between light and dark I can achieve with the medium, which is important when I'm trying to achieve dramatic lighting.
