During my gouache leaf demo from last year, I ran into a lot of issues because of treating the medium as either acrylic or watercolor. This year, I attempted to fix these issues by limiting the amount of blending and layering I did. I also made sure to use a large amount of paint so that the colors were clear instead of having to layer them to gain opacity, which led to muddiness. Overall, I think I had a much easier time than last year, but there are some things that I would still like to work on. The main thing I struggled with this time around was creating smooth gradients between colors and finding the right balance of water to paint. Since I relied on a few transitional colors instead of blending, it made the leaf look more cartoony than anticipated. When I went back to blend, I used too much water most of the time which ate away at the paint. While I don't think I will use gouache in my SI due to time's sake, I do enjoy the painted cartoony look that was created.
